This was a great group of nurses from St. Bernards. We did a shoot with them last fall for their recruiting materials and whatnot. I love that all their scrubs are different colors. It's like a bag of M&M's!
Nurses are such weird and wacky, kind and compassionate people. I can say that because I used to be one of them (well, I have a degree to show for it anyway :-). Be kind to your nurses. I promise they are some of the most hard working/underpaid/under-appreciated people in the world. ...and they control your meds.

Commercial Work - St. Bernards Health & Wellness Institute

The new Health & Wellness Institute is an amazing, state of the art facility. I spent quite a bit of time there last fall, shooting the facility, the faculty and the openings. If you live in the Jonesboro area and haven't had a chance to take a tour, then you should go now.

You will not believe all they have to offer. Multiple swimming pools, a spa, spin bike area, cafe, child care, pilates reform machines, hundreds of other machines, hot yoga room, aerobics room (that can automate if there isn't a class going!), the list goes on and on. To call the locker room a locker room is a gross understatement. They are beautiful and include so much that you barely need to bring anything to the gym with you.

Probably the greatest thing about the Health & Wellness Center is the medical integration. Now JOSM has their office inside. So when you need any sort of rehab or physical therapy, your doctor is right there in house.

Commercial Work - Cross County Bank

I rarely blog my commercial work, but I've decided that's going to change. I'm going to try to blog some of the commercial work I did during 2011, over the next few weeks.

This shoot was for Cross County Bank, which is based in Wynne, Arkansas. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. We also did lots of other action shots and headshots of all the employees at their main and branch banks. These were just a few of my fav's. Thanks for a great shoot!

Editorial Work - A Year in Review

I'm just finishing up what is hopefully my last shoot of 2011. It has been a wonderful year. I have gotten to know so many people in Jonesboro through my work. The shoot tonight was for Occasions. They did a makeover today for a very sweet and very deserving lady. She looked beautiful! Look for those in the January issue.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my editorial work this year. Editorial shoots, like commercial, are often interesting and challenge me to work with different people and different settings to convey a particular feeling.

I couldn't believe how much these two have grown since last year. I had a session last fall with them in their rice field and was thrilled to have them back for an urban shoot this fall. Gavin is a busy little 3 year old, but I managed to catch him in action. Raegan is such a sweet girl and I know in a few years she will be a heartbreaker.

I so enjoyed my time with this fellow cotton farming family. My husband grew up with Matt, but this was the first time I have had the chance to get to know his family. They were so sweet and wonderful. Blaine and Brooklyn were so engrossed with the cotton. They really made it easy for me to catch some great, spontaneous moments. I especially love the shots with their granddad, also such a nice person. He graciously tolerated me and my lens :-).

Holiday Deadlines

Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner and I thought I would give everyone a heads up on my holiday deadlines. If you would like to place a print order and receive it before Christmas, you will need to do so by December 5. Pick up will be by December 20. I will not be in the studio from December 21 through January 4.
The deadline to order Christmas cards is December 1. The exception to this is the Fall Petite Sessions scheduled for this weekend, November 19. That deadline is December 5.

This was such a fun shoot! Kristina had lots of great ideas for me, always a plus. I love to know what a client has in mind for a shoot because it helps me go in the right direction. I also like it when they're flexible and allow me to incorporate my photographic style into their ideas and these guys were all about it.

A Very Festive Family

I so enjoyed getting to know this wonderful family. The "Merry Christmas" sign was such a nice touch to some of their family portraits and the color choices just put me in the holiday mood. I love that they decided to bring Rosie, the family pet. She was wonderful!
I'm so fortunate to be located in downtown Jonesboro, with so many great locations within walking distance from the studio. We covered some ground during this shoot too! I really love the results.

Rice Harvest

I love, love, love the first image! I always try to capture those spontaneous moments, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In this case, it was a success.
I first met Georgia and Lance when she was expecting and then I got to meet little Brooks a couple of months later. I think they are a beautiful family and love that I got to get more shots of Brooks, now that he is a big boy.
When they suggested a shoot in the rice, I was all for it. I think it makes one of the best backdrops around, cotton being my other favorite.
Moms of the world take note: When we started our session Georgia had on a brown shirt with jeans and cardy, long necklace and heeled boots. When we switched locations to the park, she ditched the necklace and cardigan, added a scarf and bangle, cuffed the jeans and put on flats. The boys changed their shirts and voila. Now is that smart or what? I was so impressed, I just had to brag on her a little bit.

Gatlin - A Year in Review

It's hard to believe a year has gone by since I first met Gatlin and his family. Many photographers say that it isn't a good idea to do a "first year" type of package because if you and the client don't click, well, you're stuck with each other. I'm sure that could happen, but I have to say I don't feel that way at all. I have had such a wonderful experience with this family. It has been such a special privilege to watch Gatlin grow up - from about a week old to walking. And boy is he walking! Is there anything cuter than a little baby just starting to walk, and in a pair of blue jeans? Adorable!

Feel the Freeze!

I've been doing quite a bit of editorial photography lately, but my favorite (and most unusual) shoot so far was definitely with Coach Freeze. Jonesboro has been pumped up for the last few months about ASU's new coach and the coming football season. When I got the call from Occasions magazine I was so thrilled, not only to photograph such a prominent Jonesboro figure but also to shoot in such an unexpected location.
We did the shoot at the Ice House on Cate Street in downtown Jonesboro, in a giant walk-in freezer. When I first saw the location I thought, "Oh my goodness!" Then I thought, "Trash bags". The day of the shoot I took in one of my studio lights, to light his face and a small strobe with a blue gel, to light the ice. I then put trash bags over every piece of equipment I brought in. The ceiling was solid, dripping ice!! The floor was also damp, but all of my equipment managed to survive unscathed.
The shoot went really well, I felt. Coach Freeze was a super nice guy, as was Sam "the Iceman". Mr. Sam even made a special, early trip to pick up more 300 lb blocks of ice so the freezer would be full for the shoot.
This was definitely the coolest shoot I had in August (double entendre ;-).

A Little Something About Inspiration, Cornflake Girl & Why Pixar Always Gets It Right...

My husband, son and I just got back from our summer vacation. It was a little late this year, but that is how it works with farming sometimes. I took a break from photography because I needed to have my camera serviced while I was away, and opted not to take my backup camera. I'm feeling recharged this week. I took about 5 photos on my trip, all with my iPhone but I will never forget the look on my child's face when he saw the white, sandy beach and waves.
I decided I would do an informational post today. I have several commercial shoots this week, but today I'm making time for me. Sometimes when your hobby becomes your job you can lose sight of why you loved it enough to make it a career. Deadlines and pressure, billing and taxes, should I get that lens?, should I go that workshop?, should I find a bigger space?, will I make enough to pay myself this month? (ha, ha). So much pressure and stress can definitely put the kibosh on your creativity, which is why I periodically remind myself that one of my hobbies is still photography.
I love photography. I also love to see great design in all sorts of things. As a photographer, I am constantly inspired by magazines, movies, fashion, art, architecture and nature. I subscribe to several magazines primarily to look at the photography, Vanity Fair being my favorite (of course, the articles are also great). Looking at classic paintings is also very inspiring. Many lessons can be learned about setting the scene and posing people just by picking up an art book.
One surprising source of inspiration is from Pixar movies. Pixar never gets it wrong. I think they have found the best of the best and hired them all. I have this idea, based on no factual information, that when Pixar shows a room, they not only have their animators working on it but also bring in architects, interior designers and so forth. Everything looks amazing. I think their best example of this is in The Incredibles. All of the "sets", costumes, architecture etc., in that movie are so aesthetically pleasing.
When I watch Pixar movies, or any movie, I always watch how they set up their shots. Many times when the director really wants you to focus on a particular character's emotion, they get in very close and actually cut off the top of their head. The character is typically positioned to one side. That setup is usually always eye catching, no matter how many times you see it. Every shot in a Pixar movie is thought out; nothing is an accident. They frame everything thing up perfectly because, well, it's animation. They can take their time and do that.
People sometimes confuse inspiration and plagiarism. Growing up with five older sisters, I heard the word copying many times. When you're the youngest in a family of that size, no matter what you do, someone has always done it first and probably done it better. The truth is, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Many photographers claim that others are copying their work. If I see someone undeniably copying my work, then Hallelujah! I've done something right! You can be inspired by others without doing the exact same thing.
The image below is a good example of how you can be inspired by something and still produce an original image. I love the song Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos. A few weeks ago I noticed the image on the album cover. Tori Amos is standing in a white dress, in front of a gray background. She is small and the background is large. I decided to do an image based on that album cover. The setup is different, but the idea is the same. My husband's first reaction was that he really liked it, his second was that the client would probably not be interested in it. I didn't do it for that reason. In a creative industry it is important to push yourself not just to get paid, but to continue to love what you do, to be inspired and to improve yourself. I truly believe that if you do that, the clients will follow.
And so today... this one's for me.

Hannah - Preview

I really enjoyed the session with Hannah and her mom. Hannah is about to be a teenager and her mom wanted to document this special time. She was a very sweet girl and I tried to capture that but in a little bit more of a grown up way.
I know that many photographers are going for more of an "edgy" look in teen and senior photography these days. That is just not my style. I think we should let them be kids for as long as possible.
I sensed that her mom was a creative lady, so I did a few things this time that are a little different. The shots of her on the fence were taken using off camera lighting at sunset.

My Recipes - Ribs

Being the 4th of July and all, I thought I would share my recipe for ribs. I don't make saucy ribs, but they aren't dry either. My sweet daddy, whom I miss very much, was a grilling master. I remember watching him every year on the 4th, grilling chicken, pork chops, and ribs for his enormous brood of daughters, sons-in-law and grandkids. I would sit on the back porch watching him grill in his starched blue jeans (reserved for those occasions when he wanted to relax, starched khakis were for work). My ribs are not exactly the same as his, but a similar variation. They always seem to please a crowd, so I hope this 4th you will give it a try.
Start with baby back ribs that have been rinsed well and patted dry with paper towels. I lay out a long piece of foil for each one, several inches longer on each end than the ribs. Make sure they are very dry. Sprinkle them generously with meat tenderizer, garlic powder, oregano and cumin. Sprinkle them lightly with cayenne pepper and a little salt. Be careful with the salt, tenderizer is salty. Next I put a good dose of Wishbone Italian Dressing on them (my dad pronounced this I-talian) and wrap them up, making sure the foil is sealed. I stack them up on a baking sheet and leave in the fridge for a couple of hours (so do this in the morning).
I start grilling them a couple of hours before we want to eat. I get my coals ready and let them settle a bit, then put the ribs right over the high heat for about 5 min per side to sear. Then I move them over and lower my coals to the bottom of my grill, so they get indirect heat. If your coals don't move down, put the ribs up higher on top rack. Let ribs cook slowly for...um...well... this is the tricky part. I'm not really sure how long I cook them. I never seem to remember to time this part and just go on feeling. I can tell by looking at them that they are ready to come off (you could use a thermometer too:). If I had to guess I would say an 1 hour.
When they are ready to come off of the grill, wrap them in foil and either put them in a cooler or put them in the oven. If you do the oven, turn it on about 200 degrees and then turn it off when it gets to temperature. Let them rest about an hour and you are ready to go!!
I won't have a photo of my ribs until after the 4th. Instead I'll put this one for my dad, who loved hats.

My Recipes - Caprese

I LOVE Caprese Salad. It has such a fresh and unexpected taste. My husband loves it so much that I now have 3 basil plants in my sunroom so we always have a fresh supply in the house. My way is not exactly traditional though. I think the real thing only adds olive oil and salt to the tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella. I like to add a balsamic reduction to mine.

This isn't probably the prettiest version of it. I was making it for our dinner one night and decided at the last minute I would snap a few pictures on the patio. If you want to do individual servings, do stacks. It makes a great presentation. At parties do pick ups on little skewers with cherry tomatoes.

For the balsamic reduction, I used a cheap, supermarket brand of balsamic vinegar. I put about half the bottle in a small saucepan and brought it to a simmering boil. Don't let your heat get too high, though. Let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Take it off of the heat and let it cool. If you have extra, just store it in the fridge. It is great for lots of things.

I recently bought a bottle of Katz Zinfandel Vinegar at the Savory Pantry in Hot Springs (one of my favorite places to visit when I'm there). If you can get your hands on that, it is a real treat. Reduce it and use it as a finishing coating on baked chicken. Delicious!

Putting it together is easy. I use more tomato than cheese, almost twice as much tomato. Fresh mozzarella is a must!! Sprinkle liberally with kosher salt, drizzle with olive oil and reduction. Roll the basil leaves and slice thinly to julienne, then scatter across the top. Enjoy!

Custom Photography

Photographers often talk about custom photography and what that means, so here's my go at it. When it comes to photography, custom means pretty much what it does in other areas. Nothing is cookie cutter, each session is tailored to you. If you want location, we do it. Studio, we do it. At your house? Ok. In a meadow 20 miles outside of town? Ok. On a rooftop in Paris? Ok, but only if you're paying for the flight :) That's just me wishful thinking. If there is a product that I don't offer and I can figure out a way to provide that to you, I will.

All that being said, custom does come with a price. My session fees are $100 weekday and $150 weekend. I have a 3 year old and my weekends are precious, hence the increase. I have a minimum print order of $300. The session fee pays for my time at the shoot, the print sales pay for my time behind the scenes, editing, communicating, uploading, ordering, etc. I spend alot of time on my photos and on my education, plus I use top of the line equipment. All this to give you the best experience I can.

Some people would say the price is too high. How much do you pay the plumber just to show up? Mine costs $125. Electrician? $90. This is usually for 1 hour or less of work. Now don't get me wrong... I appreciate those guys. It's dirty work and sometimes involves crawling through spider infested attics and crawl spaces. But how much is it worth to you for someone to show up and spend time with your loved ones, capturing your special moments together? The images will last a lifetime... your sink will get clogged again in 6 months, but your photos will still be on the wall.

Snapshots are wonderful, spontaneous and capture all of life's big events. They're the bones of your photographic memories, but custom photos are special. Think of the snapshots as your playclothes, your jeans and tee. Custom photos are your party dress. You don't have as many, but you really love them and you look and feel great in them. They showcase you and your loved ones in the best way.

Many photographers discuss all of the new "moms with a camera" in the industry. The digital revolution has changed the playing field. I am not one to put down other photographers work. I prefer to focus on my work and how to make it better. Also, I happen to be one of those moms and I find it a little offensive. I would like to know how they were born with an innate knowledge of photography. It seems to me that we all had to learn at some point, some earlier than others, but some people can do something for years and they still don't quite get it. Others can pick up a skill and run with it. I think it comes down not only to ability and knowledge, but taste. Some have it, some don't.

Now that most (not all!) lifestyle photographers shoot digital, I think the editing process can really make or break the work. All good photography starts with a well taken image. Rarely editing can save you, but it is not something you should fall back on. I see some very poor editing out there on a daily basis and some that is great. I have never done a "straight out of the camera" post (SOOC), so here it goes.

I'm posting the same photo 3 ways. I chose a photo of my son, he won't mind. This photo was taken spontaneously on our patio and is maybe not the best quality photo you will see, but I chose it because his face was particularly dirty. Now me, I would print this dirt and all for my bulletin board (see previous post), but for the sake of this exercise I will remove all the food, dirt, grandma's lipstick print and scratches from his face.

You can do one of those "what's different in these two pictures" games with this one. Look closely, not only are the dirty marks gone, but his eyes are little brighter, skin tone is a little better, no red eyes, etc.

And now for the third one... notice my watermark isn't on it. I have no desire to claim it. This is my version of what I consider poor editing.

Third: Poor Edit

I see so much of this on the market. Heavy, unrealistic vignetting around the edges, red cast around eyes, nose and chin, poor skin tone that is too red or too yellow, skin that looks like it has been smudged with an eraser, "evil eyes" that have been extremely lightened and the list goes on.

So my request to you as a client or potential client, is that you educate yourself when you shop for a photographer. I may not be your choice, but make sure your choice is the quality you deserve. There is a photographer with the right style and price for everyone.

Photo Display

I'm always thinking about new ways to display my photos. I love a beautifully framed and matted print and a gallery wrap canvas is great too, but I like to change things up. I have so many pictures of my son, our families and trips we have taken and I just don't have the wall or shelf space to accommodate them all. Plus, that takes up quite a bit of time. I have good intentions about switching them out of frames, but well.... good intentions.
I decided last year to make a bulletin board for my living room. The original idea was to cover with really great upholstery fabric and just do a few larger, artsy prints and use my old brooches as pins. I have quite a few of them and I don't ever wear them (again, good intentions:). Some are passed down from family, some are junk store finds and some are newer, but they are beautiful and rarely see the light of day.
We moved to a new house in February and I still had not made my board (again, good intentions:) because I hadn't found just the right fabric. I had purchased the frame I wanted during the summer. It was actually meant to be a frame liner, but I loved the linen covering and thought, why not? It was large (40x50) and I had planned to hang it horizontally. When we moved I had a very long, very blank wall in my kitchen. I decided to go a little more casual with my project and purchased a second frame to match. They are hanging side by side, vertically, in my kitchen. I also ditched the brooch idea, but maybe I'll do that someday.
I purchased foam core and had it cut to fit. I still couldn't find the right fabric though. Then one day I was on the Anthropologie website and noticed these curtains that I loved on clearance. They only came in 63" and weren't long enough for my windows and it hit me, they were perfect for my boards.
I starched and ironed the curtains, laid them on the floor and sprayed lightly with an adhesive, then placed the foam core on. Then, the hard part, I took straight pins and starting from the middle on each side, put them in about every 1". My fingers were killing me by the end. You have to pin the middle on each side, pulling tight and work your way out. Do a little on each side and then move to the next one, so you work evenly. I did end up with a few small puckers, but the photos cover them. Next I put in the covered boards in my frames and nailed them in. (Or you could have a framer do all of this for you, much easier)
All of the photos that I print for the boards, I do with a white border. I just think it makes them look more finished. I like to do groupings of photos. I have a Razorback group, my son in the cotton, ag photos, Toronto photos, Biltmore photos, etc. Do a few large and then various sizes of small, including square for interest. I also have some of my son's school papers displayed. As they rotate out, any favorites will go into frames and with the white border they will look matted.

Emerson Exploring

I spent some time with Emerson this week. She has just turned 4 years old and is growing up too fast. She has the cutest little personality and I always know I'm in for a good shoot with her. It doesn't hurt that the kid has a pretty rockin' wardrobe either. ;-)
We spent some time exploring the Craighead Forest Park, one of my favorite places in Jonesboro. It is an amazing park and if you haven't spent any time there, you should. When I have a shoot with a child, my goal is always to make them as happy as I can in the process. No child will last long if you ask them to sit and be still constantly, or say cheese. If I walk away with only a few keepers and the child has had a good time, then I consider the shoot a success. In this case, we had way more than a few keepers... more like 80. LOL!

My Recipes - Salsa Fresca

Besides photography, I have many interests. One of those is cooking. I love to cook and rarely use recipes (except for baking, of course). I think not using recipes has forced me to become a better cook. Figuring out what works together without someone else telling me so has made me truly think about combinations. Spices and herbs are so important to a dish and once you learn the typical flavors of a particular cuisine, you can wing it.
For example, I know when I make Latin food I will probably use cumin, cilantro, white onion, soy sauce and worcestershire sauce. If I make cajun food, I will probably use thyme, bay, green onions, cayenne peppar and the "holy trinity" as my base (onion, celery and bell pepper). Thai food, I will use some curry paste, limes, raw sugar, fish sauce, maybe coconut milk, maybe peanut butter, and etc. You get the idea.
For a long time I watched cooking shows and learned techniques and ideas from them, but not necessarily recipes. I hardly ever watch cooking shows now, but I learn from doing and when I want to know something new and specific, I look it up.
SO... I thought I might try something new on the blog. I'm going to post a recipe from time to time. My recipes probably won't be exact. You will have to adjust according to taste, but all the ingredients will be there. I'm trying to build a stock photo library and thought this would be a great way to motivate myself to take more food photos.
I lived in Central America, mostly Honduras, for a couple of years when I was in my early twenties. I LOVE the food there and didn't just sit passively in the living room while the women cooked. I got in the kitchen with them and made them teach me. I have made my own adjustments on things but many of my "signature dishes" have a definite Latin flare. And so, without further ado... Salsa Fresca, a crowd pleaser!

Tomatoes - 4-6, remove core and some of the juice and do a small chop, salsa will get more watery as it chills

White Onion - 1/2 or so, finely minced

Mild Green Pepper - 2 small, finely minced (not bell, see what is available at the grocery - if only hot peppers are available then remove seeds and ribs carefully, unless you want it spicy)

Cilantro - half a bunch, roll or squeeze together and finely chop

Lime - Juice of 1 to 2, to taste

Kosher Salt - 1 tablespoon, to taste

Cumin - 1 to 2 tablespoons, to taste (I like alot of cumin, but that's just me)

Combine all ingredients and chill for an hour or so. If you get any ideas about using a food processor, I wouldn't. My friend Courtney learned the hard way that you will end up with pink foam - unless you have an incredible processor. Again all ingredients are to taste, so adjust as needed. Enjoy!

Me & My Boy at the Beach

I love South Carolina and I'm fortunate to have not one, but two sisters who live there. I posted some senior pictures of my niece Emily a few weeks ago. They are further inland in beautiful, rolling country. My son and I had a great time at their place. They have horses, dog, cat, rabbit and pond - a three year old's paradise. W decided the horses belonged to him and is still talking about them weeks later.

My sister Annette has lived on the coast for many years and it is always a treat to go stay at the beach. I knew W would love it, but I wasn't prepared for how much. The pictures above were taken around sunset on our last day there. Although they look so cute and spontaneous, the soundtrack playing was me screaming at him to "NOT RUN INTO THE OCEAN!!!!!" I'm a little bit chicken when it comes to undertow and W was feeling very brave that day.

My niece Rachel, so sweet, is a budding photographer. She took the one of us above. I have so few shots of us together, I really wanted one of our mommy/son trip. This was as still as I was able to get him. Lesson - don't try to hold a kid back at the beach.

It's always so special when I get to do a session with friends or family. I love that I got to see my friend Gina while she is pregnant. We met up in St. Louis a few weeks ago and had such a great time, catching up and rehashing old times.
Gina is a bit of a silly girl sometimes, so it was a little difficult to keep a straight face for both of us. It's hard enough to tell someone I barely know to "lie down in the grass, put your hands on your belly and look at the sky" without getting a little tickled. However, the shots of her laughing are the best. They really show her beautiful personality and how happy she is to be a first time mommy.

I had a fantastic time last weekend in St. Louis with my best girlfriends! I had a photography workshop on Monday with Dave Hobby and Joe McNally, so I called up my girlfriends and it all worked out. Life is so hectic and everyone has different schedules, it gets harder to get together with every passing year.
My buddy Gina is expecting her first, so on Sunday, we headed down to City Park and did a little maternity session. We sat outside on the patio of the restaurant there and had a beautiful brunch. If you are ever in St. Louis on a Sunday, I highly recommend.
The workshop on Monday was great. Both Hobby and McNally are excellent speakers and I know I learned some very valuable things that day. Great new lighting techniques, especially useful for my commercial clients.

I had a great time with Eszlee and her mommy and daddy during their session. We went exploring in the back alleys of downtown Jonesboro. Eszlee had a great time throwing rocks and running around, blond curls bouncing all the way.
I love those little blond curls :). I noticed in her gallery that there were quite a few pics of them, but I'm a sucker for the "walking away" shot.
I also had to add the ever-present shoe photo (another one of my favorite shots). We even managed to get Dad in there too, for some really sweet daddy/daughter photos.

Someday I'm going to go to Washington when it's not snowing. I have been a couple of times and both times it has snowed. Come to think of it, it has snowed during quite a few of our trips ( ...farm life).
My husband's best buddy lives in D. C., so we decided to hit the road with my sister-in-law for some fun in the city. It's so wonderful to take a trip with like-minded people. It was truly one of the best trips we've ever taken.
We saw great sights, ate unbelievable food and had lots of fun in between. I think I laughed harder in 5 days than I have in the last 5 years, and that's saying alot.
Above are some random shots of various monuments. Many were taken at the Roosevelt Memorial. I love quotes and that's basically what the monument is, quotes and waterfalls. One of my favorite shots is the piper on top. He was about to play for a wedding and I couldn't resist! It makes me think of Mike Meyers in So I Married an Axe Murderer, "A piper is down, a piper is down."

We had such a wonderful and relaxing Christmas this year. No pneumonia, no vomiting...I call that a winner. It was so relaxing that I'm just now blogging a few photos I took that day. Having kids helps you remember just how fun life can be. The best part of the day was watching W. do donuts in the street on his new lawn mower, in the snow! How random and great that we had a white Christmas.
My mother joined us for dinner. Beef wellingtons, a caramel chess tart, etc. I have to say, it was a success ;-)

We went downtown for the second part of this session and even though it was FREEZING that day, we managed to get some keepers. I happen to love purple and gray (the colors of Amy Long Photography ;-), so when I saw the purple shirt I knew I had to use the gray wall. Beautiful, beautiful girls!

Welcome Home Troops

Wow! Where do I start? I met Lida through my sister-in-law, who mentioned several months ago that Lida's boyfriend was in Afghanistan and would be coming home in the fall. Lida wanted to find a photographer to come and capture the moment for her and her friends. I jumped at the chance.
I firmly believe you should always be on the lookout for ways to give back. Most of the time, the best ones fall in your lap. This was one of those times. I think everyone should go, at least once, and watch the troops come home after a long absence. They have made sacrifices I can't even imagine making.
The atmosphere was emotional and festive at the same time, smiles and tears. I was afraid I would be crying along with them (I've been known to get choked up over things that have nothing to do with me). Luckily I saved it until now. When I look at the images, it reminds me of how privileged I am to witness so many human emotions through my lens... one of the best parts of being a photographer.

My son is very fortunate to have great cousins on both sides of the family, a great thing for an only child. We spent the day a couple of weeks ago with some of his cousins. They watched football, played outside, made Razorback cookies and finished up the day in the cotton field. All of the kiddos were very good sports about having their Christmas card picture made for Sasha & Grandaddy. I love the top picture. I think the U of A should use it for an ad about future students ;). Just sayin'.

My nephew turned 4 this week and by a stroke of luck, his mom, my sister, was going to be in town for the weekend. She decided to have his party with the home crowd. Even though my W is a little bit younger, they played together so well! Of course it didn't hurt that she had a train for them to ride and a bounce house. The whole day was all about Toy Story. Woody, Buzz, Slinky Dog and army men abounded. All of his little cousins were there and we all sat outside under a big tree and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

It's beginning to look alot like... Chirstmas cards!

Just some ideas for possible Christmas cards. Anyone who is interested in cards for the holidays this year, the above will be cut into the shape shown. The circle is 5x5 and can be pre-punched with a hole at the top, so it can be an ornament. I have 5x5 circle, 5x5 square and 5x7 rectangle. All are available in smooth or scalloped edge. The 5x7 is also available in the ornate design shown. I think for me, that shape is the winner this year. The cards are double sided and include envelopes. Colors will be chosen to coordinate with the clothing in the image that you choose. Card orders must be placed by November 15th to guarantee them for the holidays.

My eldest sister is turning 50 in a couple of weeks. In fact, we have the same birthday, oldest and youngest of 6 daughters, 17 years apart. Most 17 year olds want a car for their birthday... she got me. My mom, my sisters and I went on a weekend girls trip to Asheville, NC, to celebrate. It was so beautiful there; I highly recommend it. There is shopping, eating, mountains and of course the Biltmore Estate. What stands out to me about the house is the incredible attention to detail. Every ceiling, every railing, every light fixture, every everything! So, I'm posting a few pictures of some of my favorite details below.

The fourth photo down, of the grain coming out, was taken through the back glass in a combine. I was covered in dirt head to toe by the time I finished, but it was a good day. I've been a little MIA on the blog lately. I'm hoping to change that this week. It feels like I've been playing catch up ever since I went on vacation in August. Add lots of shoots and 2 weekend trips since then and well, things have been hectic to say the least. I've had the pleasure of working with several area businesses in the last month, including HMG, St. Bernards Hospital, Ritter Communications, Ritter Agribusiness, Kumarn Premier Thai Cuisine, Southard Dentistry and I have 2 shoots in the next week with Liberty Bank. Whew!! I have also had some great lifestyle sessions in the mix.
Below are a few "behind the scenes" images from the shoot for St. Bernards Women's Heart Health. We did the shoot in my studio at True. Kenny and Adam from Anthem Pictures were shooting video and I did the stills.

I wanted to post a quick update to let everyone know I am in my studio now. I've been busy setting everything up for the past several weeks. I have it almost the way I want it, furniture, lamps, green stuff, etc. Everything in place except, um, well, ... prints :-). You would think that would be the first thing to go up. Anyway, that should be underway in a week or so. Below are a few pics to give you an idea. I hope you all appreciate my fantastic writing skills with a mouse.

On a different note, if you have ever done anything that relies on opinions, you know how nerve racking it can be. You have moments of triumph and elation and moments when you are plagued with insecurities. When I do something I tend to throw myself in, mind, heart and soul. That's how this business has been for me. Every time I put a photograph out into the world for other judging eyes to see, it is a little piece of me. Sometimes I know right away that my clients/family/friends love it, sometimes I'm not so sure. What makes it all worthwhile is when you get a little unexpected comment to keep you going.
Last week a client called me after she saw her preview on the blog and said, "You gave me what I wanted, without me even knowing what I wanted." Comments like that make it all worthwhile. I've also had a couple of pep talks from my sweet sainted sister-in-law this week and this morning a pretty great conversation with my sister Carole about some of my recent work.
I just want to say thanks for all of the encouragement, from all of you. There are many more heroes whom I didn't mention. It really does mean so much.

Rice Country

I spent some time in a rice field yesterday, which is unusual for me (I'm a cotton & soybeans girl). I found out that rice makes an excellent backdrop, as do most crops. These kiddos were so cute and fun. Gavin was as full of energy as every little boy should be and Reagin was beautiful. Watching the rice harvest reminded me that fall is just around the corner (yay!). Fall is such a great time for taking pictures and I feel like this family was my first fall family of the season. We even managed to get Dad off of the tractor for a few shots.

Will Work for (Thai) Food

I have to say, this was one of the best jobs I've ever had. I spent the afternoon with Chef Kitt, at Kumarn Premier Thai Cuisine, sampling all of the beautiful dishes he made for me to photograph. Chef Kitt is truly an artist. He not only makes incredible food, he makes it a work of art. The second photo from the top was my lunch. I told him I wanted tofu and he made it with the perfect mixture of spice & sweet, tamarind, basil and I don't know what. All of the food has so many complex layers of flavor. Amazing!

A word of advice, when you go there, don't leave without trying the mango ice cream. He makes it completely from scratch, purees the mangoes and the whole nine yards.

OMG?...No, HMG!

I got a call from True, to do a shoot for HMG. They are a medical group & needed to update their headshots for ads, the website & their directory.

Faultline Studios was already on board to do the video, but they needed an extra hand on the photos. We had two very long days, last Friday for 10 hours & yesterday for 13 (but with lots of breaks). However, when you're with this group, the time goes by pretty fast. They kept me entertained with Mexican Cokes & Ms. Pac-Man. The studio is unbelievable! I'm posting a few photos below to give you an idea of what it's like, but you really just have to see it to believe it. The pictures do not do it justice. Thanks guys!

Home Sweat Home...

No, that's not a typo. :) It's tough coming back from Canada when it's 100 degrees here. We made it home from Toronto, safe & sound! The trip was great; Toronto is a wonderful city. I highly recommend it. The top photo was taken from a ferry. The second is Toronto's most recognizable landmark, the CN Tower. I know the sky looks fake, but I didn't enhance it at all, I promise (I just used a polarizer, is that cheating?) I really like the third photo, so much in fact, that I think it will soon be hanging over our bed on a 30x40 canvas. I took it from our hotel window one night when I couldn't sleep (a regular occurrence). The fourth and final photo is of W, carrying his stuff to the car. I had to put at least one of him in today (more later). He looked so grown up with his suitcase. He had a good time in "Ronto", as he kept calling it. He kept us entertained throughout the trip by saying things like chocolate milk is white milk's best friend. ;-) We took him to Centre Island, where they had a small amusement park with quaint little rides for small ones. It was the highlight of his summer, I'm sure. More to come later...

Camille - Preview

Camille is one of those little girls who truly has a baby doll face. We had a great time seeing all the animals at Miss Ann's house, and even got to feed Mrs. Peepers a hyacinth. My favorite so far is the second from the top. When I look at the picture, the word cherub comes to mind. Thanks Camille! I had a great time getting to know you!

It's official...I have a space of my own!! I don't have any pictures of it yet, but I will get some up in the next few weeks, as I move in. My new location will be in the True Visionary Marketing building at 504 Flint, in downtown Jonesboro. The studio will be open by appointment only, but I will be there most Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you want to stop by, give me a ring and I just might be in. All of my studio equipment will be set up there and I will also be doing sale sessions there from now on. When you come in to order your prints, you will be able to relax in an armchair and see your gallery on a huge 100" screen. I hope this all serves to help my clients have an even more pleasant experience before, during and after our session. Thanks everyone!
